This side-view cross section shows how light entering the top of the concentrator is totally internally reflected due to the difference in refractive indices between the polycarbonate sidewall and water filling.  The light is concentrated down onto photovoltaic (PV) cells attached to the bottom of the optical trough. 

 

Each concentrator section is one meter long and housed in a mounting frame that holds multiple tubes.
